Online business models in 2026: what the numbers show

We asked which of our projects would make money fastest, then looked for numbers someone had to prove. Every online business model had bad odds.

tl;dr

  • On one marketplace, the typical small content site for sale makes about $110 a month, mostly from ads rather than affiliate links.
  • Across one large affiliate network, the median program earns $0.14 per click.
  • From February 2027, YouTube pays no Shorts ad revenue below 10 million views in 90 days.
  • At the Meta ads median of about $39 a customer, a cheap product loses money on paid traffic.

why readFor anyone choosing a first online business model: what content sites, short-form video and online stores actually earn.

Instead of income reports, we looked for numbers someone had to prove: broker listings, a whole affiliate network, YouTube's own rules and published ad benchmarks. This is what we found about the main online business models in 2026.

The short answer is that every model has bad odds. Content sites, short-form video and online stores all pay far less than the stories about them suggest. What differs is how fast you find out whether one is working, and whether a platform can switch your income off.

Content and affiliate sites: the typical one makes about $110 a month

Motion Invest is a marketplace that sells small content websites. It says it checks every site's income and traffic before listing it. On 11 September 2026 it had 47 established websites for sale, not counting its cheap starter sites.

The median figure is our count of its public listings, and the best site made $3,766 a month. Most of these sites do not run on affiliate links. Only 7 of the 47 list Amazon's affiliate program. The rest list an ad network, such as Google AdSense or Mediavine.

Bigger sites exist, and they take years. On 8 September 2026, Empire Flippers, a broker that checks the books before listing, had 17 businesses for sale that earned at least partly from affiliate links or display ads. Most were content websites. By our count, their median net profit was $8,925 a month, averaged over the past year, and their median age was five years, counted from the month they first made money.

The links themselves earn little. One analysis pulled the entire Skimlinks catalogue, an affiliate network of about 29,000 programs. Of the 9,356 programs with measurable earnings per click, the median earned $0.14 per click. 46% earned less than ten cents per click.

The typical small content site makes about $110 a month, and most of that comes from ads, not affiliate links. The sites making thousands a month are around five years old.

Short-form video: big views are not income

One affiliate marketer's Facebook Reels reached 1.5 million views in 28 days. Viewers were asked to comment, and each commenter was sent the link by automated message.

1,500,000views
36link clicks
0sales

The poster said Facebook often hides these automated messages, so many commenters may never have seen the link. This is one case, and the poster thought something was broken. The replies blamed the setup, not the audience, and the numbers cannot show where people dropped off. What it does show is that 1.5 million views on a video app can send almost no one to a shop.

YouTube Shorts monetization changes in 2027. From 1 February, a channel earns ad revenue on Shorts only if it had 10 million qualified Shorts views in the previous 90 days, which is about 111,000 views a day, every day. A new channel joining through Shorts needs 20 million. Below the line, Shorts ad revenue stops. YouTube says smaller channels will get milestone bonuses instead, tied to shopping, brand deals and trends, with details still to come.

Getting paid by YouTube does not mean making a profit. One faceless channel joined the YouTube Partner Program within three months of its first video in January 2024. The creator estimated the year's income at $8,905 and expenses at $9,715, in Canadian dollars. Only $2,750 US of that income came from YouTube. Most of the rest came from brand deals.

Views are attention, not income. Below 10 million Shorts views in 90 days, Shorts ad revenue is zero, and even a million-view month can send almost no one to a shop.

Online stores: Meta ads need a high margin

Triple Whale is an analytics company used by more than 40,000 online brands. In its data for August 2025 to July 2026, the median cost of winning one customer through Meta ads was $38.99.

$78-130profit needed per order

By category, the median ran from about $27 for online courses to about $52 for electronics. One ecommerce ad agency's rule of thumb is to spend 30 to 50% of an order's gross profit on winning it. At $39, each order needs $78 to $130 of gross profit.

A $40 product with $20 of gross profit loses about $19 on each sale that costs $39 to win. Even the cheapest category, at about $27, costs more than the $20 the first sale earns.

At the median Meta price, cheap products need free traffic, such as search, video and word of mouth. Only a large margin can afford to buy customers there.

Conclusion: online business models are vehicles

Each model has a problem at its center, and none of them has a settled answer yet.

  • Content sites are slow. challenge The typical one makes about $110 a month, and the ones making thousands are around five years old.
  • Affiliate pays a small share of someone else's sale. challenge You do the persuading, the store owns the sale, and the median program earns $0.14 per click.
  • Views do not pay on their own. challenge Shorts ad revenue needs 10 million views every 90 days from 2027, and big view counts can still send almost no one to a shop.
  • A paid customer can cost more than a cheap product earns. challenge At the Meta ads median of about $39 a customer, a $40 product with $20 of profit loses money on every paid sale.

These are medians from one marketplace, one network and one ad platform. They show where each problem is, not how big it is for every product. Other ways of finding customers, such as search, creators and email, cost differently, and even within Meta the median runs from $27 to $52 depending on category.

The rules move too. From February 2027, YouTube stops paying Shorts ad revenue to existing channels below 10 million views in 90 days, not just to new ones. A model that paid last year can stop paying after one policy change.

None of this is a reason to stay out. A problem without an answer yet is not a problem without an answer. Content sites, affiliate links, video and online stores are vehicles, and the tactics that drive them change as the technology changes, so a problem that looked closed a few years ago can open again with a new tool.

The model is the vehicle, not the plan. Name the problem first, then look for the new tool that gets around it, instead of relying on the ways that used to work.
